HISTORY

Great Bookham is mentioned in Domesday as Bocheham as is Little Bookham so the settlement must have divided at some point. At that time there was a church and a mill though the present church dates mostly to the twelth century. There are several interesting monuments not least one to Cornet Francis Geary who died at the head of his troop having been ambushed by rebels in the American War of Independence. St Nicholas Church was visited by George VI and Queen Elizabeth whilst on their honeymoon when staying at Polesden Lacy.

Great Bookham is situated just below Leatherhead on the A246 Guildford Road. It offers good local facilities but more comprehensive shopping can be found at Leatherhead.

Nearby there are many interesting places to visit including Polesden Lacy, a magnificent house in some 1400 acres on the North Downs. It was remodelled in the early part of the twentieth century and is famous for its beautiful tapestries and paintings. There is a walled rose garden and a variety of walks in the Edwardian gardens and landscaped park. There are several golf courses in the area and the Thorndike Theatre in Leatherhead has an excellent reputation.

Tenure: 99 Years from December 1987. No Ground Rent.
