St Leonards-on-Sea : St Leonards is a seaside resort and now really part of Hastings, sharing a shingle and sand beach. The town has good shopping and there are many places to visit and see locally including the numerous museums and not least Battle Museum. Along the coast are excellent walks with Beachy Head one of the highest cliffs on the south coast.

HISTORY

St Leonards-on-Sea was laid out in fashionable Regency style in the early part of the 19th century by James and Decimus Burton and the Royal Victoria Hotel and much else still survives. The town has since expanded considerably beyond the original designers' plans propelled by the arrival of the railways in the 19th century with a station named St Leonards Warrior Square.

Warrior Square was built in the late 19th century though the gardens were officially opened in 1852. The town was built on the fairly steeply climbing land to the west of Hastings and the lower lying area, Bulverhythe, is thought to be the original site of the port of Hastings.
