Hawkhurst is an attractive old town and lies about 12 miles south-east of Tunbridge Wells on an old Roman road which crossed the Weald at this point. It is mentioned in Domesday as Hauochesten and probably derived its name from 'Wooded hill frequented by Hawks'. The older part of the village is centred round the the green known as The Moor.

Hawkhurst was once a smuggling town receiving brandy and silk from Rye and there are several old houses where the illicit goods were stowed away before being sold off. The town was once the hub of the Wealden iron industry and William Penn owned ironworks here in the 17th century.
