Ramsbury : Lying between the Roman fortified town of Cunetio and the great villa estate at Littlecote, the Saxon settlement at Ramsbury became a centre of major importance, famous for its iron-smelting forge. Later in 909 AD, it was made a bishopric. The present church, dating from the 13th century, is thought to have been built on the site of the Saxon Cathedral Minster in what is now the centre of Ramsbury. Today the village still retains shops and there are beautiful walks along the River Kennet.
