The Manor House consists 36 apartments on two floors. The original Manor House, built in local stone with a Welsh slate roof, dates from the 18th century. In the grounds, 32 new apartments have been built around the original building to form a series of quiet courtyards with attractive landscaping and paved areas surrounded by mature trees.

Totnes was known as Totenais in Domesday and is one of England's oldest boroughs. It probably derived its name from 'Totta's headland' and lies at the highest navigable point on the River Dart about eight miles northwest of Dartmouth. It was once a Saxon market centre with a mint and some of the old Saxon walls and ruined remains of its castle can still be seen.

There are many Elizabethan and Georgian houses and the historic Brutus stone is set in a pavement near the restored 15th century East Gate. One of Brutus' descendants, Aeneas, is reputed to have founded the Kingdom of Britain after his long voyage from Troy.
