HISTORY

'Wootton' in old English meant 'farmstead in or near a wood' with the 'Bassett' denoting manorial ownership in the Middle Ages by the Bassett family who built the great fortified house of Vastern to the south-west of the village.

Royal Wootton Bassett is a small town north west of the Marlborough Downs. It consists largely of a long and wide high street with a variety of shops, inns and restaurants. Nearby is Lydiard Park, the ancestral seat of the Viscounts Bolingbroke, with its beautiful parkland and woodlands.
