Norton is a market town about two and a half miles north of Stockton-on-Tees and has long been settled. Anglo-Saxon remains have been discovered from the 6th century and St Marys Church is thought to be the only cruciform Anglo-Saxon church in northern England. Norton has a wide high street with various shops and several restaurants and cafes.

Stockton-on-Tees is an old settlement on the north bank of the River Tees and has one of the widest high streets in England. Its market is dated to the early 14th century and the new Castlegate shopping centre stands on the site of the old castle destroyed in the 17th century.
