Dauntsey is a small village about six miles west of Royal Wootton Bassett just north of the M4 and about nine miles northeast of Chippenham. It was mentioned in Domesday as Dantesie and belonged to Malmesbury Abbey. Dauntsey Park House dates from the 14th century and Dauntsey Lock is just south of the motorway. The original almshouses provided by Earl Danby were rebuilt in the 19th century.
