Bookham was mentioned in Domesday as Bocheham and belonged to St Peters Abbey. It has an even earlier reference being recorded in the 7th century with the Abbey having received the grant of a number of properties. Today the largest property nearby is Polesden Lacy, a regency villa owned by The National Trust and open to the public with walled gardens and acres of farmland. The high street has a number of shops, pubs and restaurants. There are two commons with meadows and woodland in both Little Bookham and Great Bookham owned by The National Trust.
