The New Forest became a royal hunting preserve when the area was appropriated by William I in the 11th century. It is an outstanding area of natural beauty full of deer and ponies and a unique area of ecological significance. There are many beautiful walks on the heaths and in the ancient woodlands.

Sway is about four miles northeast of New Milton and about the same distance from Lymington to the southwest. Brockenhurst is about two miles and Lyndhurst about five miles. Junction 1 of the M27 is about nine miles and trains from Sway to London (Waterloo) take under two hours.
