Lake Leman lies by Chillon‘s walls: The castle of Chillon guards the eastern pass to Italy above Lake Geneva and beyond is Aigle and the road to Champery. Champery was one of the first skiing destinations and has some beautiful old buildings. Switzerland is clean and orderly and above all honest. In this part of the Swiss Alps the scenery is breathtaking with the Dents du Midi and its seven irregular peaks providing a magnificent backdrop to the chalets perched here and there. The area has long attracted the British and today it is much easier to buy that second home or retirement property.

It is only recently that buying a property in Switzerland has become easier due to the relaxation of the law requiring an authorisation before buying a property. The Law is a federal one and each canton has slightly different approaches to it so it is wise to engage the services of a local agent. There are several new developments with spectacular apartments for purchase in different resorts and if you want a purpose built retirement development visit La Residence at Chateau d‘Oex, about an hour by car from Chillon or an hour by train from Montreux. At La Residence there is an indoor swimming pool, fitness room, sauna, restaurant and bar with an emergency call system and resident manager. Elsewhere there are chalets, both new and old to rent or buy.

Many people like to go abroad when they retire some to live permanently and others to miss out on the winter months at home. The choice in the Mediterranean is now huge and varied but perhaps the most spectacular destination for quiet sophistication in retirement is Sotogrande - an estate encompassing world class golf courses, international polo, beach clubs, water sports, tennis and riding. Sotogrande is ideal as a base for excursions into Southern Andalucia with its white villages and striking countryside, for trips by ferry across the Straits to Africa, or just for driving up to Marbella.

Property is no longer as cheap as it once was but the selection is greater than ever. From the Hotel Club Maritimo, prominently situated overlooking the harbour entrance, you head inland to the western corner of the marina basin and you‘ll find Isla Tortuga. This is a superb island development of secure properties perfect for retirement in the sun or that second home. Some of the properties have private pools and there is a security service connected to all apartments. Contact: http://www.holmesotogrande.com
