Tonbridge is mentioned as Tonebridge in Domesday and belonged to the Bishop of Rochester. It is set at the highest navigable point of the River Medway and was probably a settlement in Roman times. The town was always a strategic settlement and the castle was besieged no less than three times in the Middle Ages being severely burnt in the 13th century.
