Girton was mentioned in Domesday as Gretone and belonged to the Count of Mortain. The village is north of Cambridge and now famous for being the first Cambridge women's college. It was long settled and traces of early occupation have been found from the Bronze age. A selection of Saxon items are kept at Girton College. The parish church of St Andrew dates from the 13th century and the village has a supermarket and several pubs.
