Tamworth is situated on the River Tame and became an important Saxon stronghold when it was taken from the Danes in the early tenth century. In Domesday it was known as Tamuuorde and its castle has both Saxon and Norman remains. Its 8th century mint was still operating in the 12th century. Tamworth developed as a town due to its position on the Rivers Tame and Anker and became a natural trading point.
