Gateshead lies on the southern bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle-upon-Tyne and there has been a settlement here since Roman times. When Edgar the Atheling was defeated by William 1st on Gateshead Fell in the 11th century the area was mostly forest. The town expanded rapidly in the 19th century and is now guarded by the Angel of the North, one of the largest sculptures in the country.
