Retirement Properties Spotlight in Portland

Portland : The Isle of Portland rocks have resisted erosion and its quarries have provided its pale stone to many important buildings in the country, not least Buckingham Palace. The Royal Navy has had a presence at Portland since the mid 19th century when the harbour was built. Henry VIII built Portland Castle on the north shore as part of his chain of forts along the south coast. Chesil Beach to the west stretches for ten miles to Abbotsbury behind which is a lagoon known as The Fleet and an important feeding ground for the swans.
