Stevenage is about five miles south-east of Hitchin just to the east of the A1(M) and up to the middle of the 20th century it remained a small market town. Its name is thought to derive from 'strong oak tree'. Today it has greatly expanded following its designation as a New Town shortly after the Second World War. The town was planned with six self-contained neighbourhoods and the pedestrianised town centre was the first purpose built traffic-free centre in the country.
