Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Bishop's Waltham
Bishop's Waltham was mentioned as Waltham in Domesday and belonged to the Bishop of Winchester with a population then of about 450. It was originally a Saxon village sacked by the Danes at the beginning of the 11th century. The town lies about ten miles northeast of Southampton and has a spectacular ruined palace destroyed in the Civil War when the Royalist defenders were finally overcome. The Bishop's Palace was built by Henry de Blois in the 12th century and the ruins are open to the public. The town has several Georgian buildings and a good variety of shops.
