Cromer Hall to the south of the town was destroyed by fire in the early 19th century. It was later rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style by William John Donthorne, a Norfolk architect, and became the home of the Baring family. At the begining of the 20th century Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at the hall and it is thought the legend of Black Shuck inspired him to write The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Cromer is about four miles east of Sheringham and about 20 miles due north of Norwich. North Walsham is eight miles and Holt nine miles. Fast trains to London (Liverpool Street) take just under three hours.
