Slough lies just to the north of the M4 and due to its excellent communications has one of the largest trading estates in Europe. Whilst Henry III had a palace at nearby Cippenham the town really developed as an important staging post in the 18th century and developed further with the coming of the railways. In the early 20th century the town saw rapid industrialisation and subsequent growth.

Slough is about 23 miles west of London and about 20 miles east of Reading. Maidenhead is six miles and Windsor three miles. The M4 at Junction 6 is less than two miles and Junction 2 of the M40 is five miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) from Slough take approximately 20 minutes.
