Stamford lies on the River Welland and dates back to Roman times and was once capital of the Fens. It was an important staging point on the Great North Road and and prospered in the Middle Ages through the wool and cloth trades getting a significant boost when its cloth was used at the Field of the Cloth of Gold meeting in the 16th century between Henry VIII and Francis I.

The town has many notable period buildings including Burghley House, south of the town and ancestral seat of the Cecils which was completed in 1587 and is one of the finest examples of late Elizabethen architecture. It is open to the public in the summer months.
