Bracknell was designated a new town shortly after the Second World War and little is now left of the original small town. The town centre was built in the late 1960s and there is now considerable light industry in the town including several well known software companies and telecomunications firms. To the south of the town is Hill Park, a mansion dating from the mid-18th century which now houses the Arts Centre and has held several major music festivals. The Wilde theatre was opened in 1984 and is named after Oscar Wilde who created the character 'Lady Bracknell' in his play 'The Importance of being Ernest'.

Bracknell is about ten miles southeast of Reading and three miles west of Ascot. Maidenhead is eight miles and Sandhurst five miles. The M4 at Junction 10 is five miles and the M3 at Junction 3 is also five miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) from Reading take about half an hour.
