Cheltenham became increasingly popular in the 19th Century following the fortunes of the fashionable spa towns. It is thought that the beneficial effects of the waters were due to the presence of magnesium and sodium sulphates.
Cheltenham is one of England‘s most attractive and elegant spa towns famed for its relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The Promenade has well known shopping names, and Lansdown Place and Montpellier Parade are impressive Regency achievements in their own right. Cheltenham is well known for its Annual Arts festivals and of course the Gold Cup. There are many places of interest nearby including the Roman amphitheatre at Cirencester, Chedworth Roman Villa, Sudley Castle and the Gardens at Winchcombe. There are beautiful walks to have on Leckhampton Hill above the town.
