Stanhope House is situated off the High Street and is a short flat walk to local shops churches, library, restaurants, coffee bars and numerous antique shops. There is a regular bus service just outside the house and the local voluntary service often support residents in their journeys out. It provides accommodation of a high standard for older people seeking to live a relatively independent life with the security and companionship of a small household.

The Abbeyfield movement was founded in the 1950's as an expression of Christian concern for older people which took the form of a community effort to provide residents with their own homes, within a framework of small secure households which could become the goodwill and friendly contact in the local area. The Abbeyfield is a not-for-profit charitable organisation. It is managed by a Committee of 8-9 volunteers elected by the Society's local membership and accountable to them as well as a house committee of local volunteers.
Abbeyfield Honiton sets out to provide a special type of accommodation which serves to bridge the gap between someone's own home and a care home. It provides another option for older people who no longer feel able to lead a completely independent life in a private house but who like to be active. We do not provide personal care that is offered in a care home.
The key figure in the house is the house manager. Her duties are principally the general wellbeing and day to day running of the house but she will also look after residents suffering from any sort of minor health upsets which normal families would expect to manage. Residents register with the local doctor and use his or her services as they would in an ordinary private house. The house manager is on hand to provide assistance to contact help and deal with little emergencies.
