The market town of Totnes is about five miles away at the highest navigable point of the River Dart. It was once a Saxon market centre with a mint and some of the old Saxon walls and ruined remains of its castle can still be seen. There are shops, cafes and restaurants in abundance and many Elizabethan and Georgian houses testifying to its past prosperity. The historic Brutus stone is set in a pavement near the restored 15th century East Gate. One of Brutus' descendants, Aeneas, is reputed to have founded the Kingdom of Britain after his long voyage from Troy.
