Situated on the River Severn Gloucester was always an inland port important for trade in iron and later the cloth industry ultimately declining with the rise in importance of Bristol. Today the city still has many warehouses which are part of a vibrant tourist and shopping centre. The Three Choirs music festival takes place every three years.

Gloucester is about eight miles west of Cheltenham and 16 miles northwest of Cirencester. Stroud is about eight miles and Ross-on-Wye 16 miles. The M5 at J11 is about four miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) take about an hour and fifty minutes.
