As with its more illustrious neighbour, Brighton, the hitherto small fishing village of Worthing expanded after a Royal visit in the late eighteenth century.
There are many interesting places nearby to visit including Cissbury Ring to the south of South Downs Way, an old Iron-Age fort reoccupied in the fifth century, and Chanctonbury Ring to the north. There is also Parham near Storrington, the C18th Woods Mill at Henfield and Highdown Gardens to the west of the town. To the east at Shoreham is the Marlipins Museum dating from the C12th and older than many of its exhibits. A little further afield is Bignor Roman Villa and the Chalk Pits Museum at Amberley. The Saxon Church of St Mary's at Sompting Abbots is well worth a visit with its 'Rhenish helm'. |
