Birchington-on-Sea is a large village on the northeast coast of Kent and a popular tourist and retirement destination. Minnis Bay is an attractive beach and once the site of an Iron Age settlement. The village is first mentioned in the 13th century and became a smugglers haunt in the 18th century. Several village houses are reputed to have bricked up tunnels. Birchington remained a small farming community until the 19th century when it developed as a coastal resort. There are are a good number of shops, inns and restaurants and there is a railway station.
