Plymouth is an ancient settlement about 230 miles south-west of London and derived its name from 'mouth of the River Plym'. Originally known as Sutton and mentioned in Domesday as Sutona (southern village) this name is still preserved in 'Sutton Harbour' - one of Plymouth's three harbours. In the Middle Ages Plymouth became the most important port in the south west and the main centre from which expeditions set off around the world.

Sir Francis Drake began his circumnavigation in the Golden Hind from here and the Mayflower left for Plymouth in New England in 1620. In the 17th century the Royal Navy Dockyards were built and today ships are guided into the harbour by the Eddystone Lighthouse. Plymouth remains very much a Royal Navy Port guarding the Western Approaches.

Plymouth is situated at the Junction of the main east-west trunk route the A38 with the A386 which travels northwards to Tavistock and the A30. Plympton to the east is about five miles and Liskeard to the west about 16 miles. Fast trains to London (Paddington) take three hours.
