Teignmouth became a port in the 13th century and became involved with the Newfoundland fisheries which was an important source of employment for the town. Privateering was also important to the local economy. By the early 19th century Teignmouth was known as a fashionable resort.

Teignmouth is about 12 miles south of Exeter and about six miles north of Torquay. Newton Abbot is six miles to the west and Dawlish three miles to the north.
