Portsmouth is situated on Portsea Island where the Solent meets the English Channel and has been a major naval port since the 13th century. Portsmouth lies on Portsea Island overlooking the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. Ferries leave for Ryde and the Isle of Wight from Clarence Pier and from the harbour for Spain and France. The M275, about three miles away, connects with the M27 at Junction 12, about five miles, with access to the motorway network in the south of England. Fast trains to London (Waterloo) take about an hour and a half.
