Rowan Croft is situated off Goodwood to the west of the A19 and to the north of Newcastle. The development consists of 45 flats with extra care facilities completed in 2010.

Newcastle was England's most important border fortress successfully repelling the Scots three times in the 14th century. It was one of the most prosperous towns in the country and in the 16th century developed further when the burgesses of the town successfully petitioned for the sole trading rights for the shipment of coal. This of cousre led to further rivalry with neighbouring Sunderland which later supported Parliament when Newcastle declared for the King in the Civil War. Newcastle became a major city owing much to the export of coal and later shipbuilding and heavy engineering.

Newcastle is about ten miles from the coast and about six miles northwest of Washington. Morpeth is about 14 miles and Ponteland eight miles. Gateshead is about four miles and the A184 meets the A194(M) about five miles southeast of Newcastle. Fast trains to London (Kings Cross) take just over three hours.
