Royston is mentioned in Domesday as Rorestone and was originally built by the monks of Monk Bretton Priory and the church has a 15th century tower with a rare pentagon-shaped oriel window. The town lies on the Barnsley Canal due north of Monk Bretton and for many years was a small farming community. In the late 18th century with the opening of the canal followed by the coming of the railways the town joined the industrial revolution with a mine, clay works and brick manufacturing.

Royston is about three miles north of Barnsley and about 15 miles south of Leeds and 18 miles west of Doncaster. Rotherham is about 13 miles and Wombell six miles. The M1 at Junction 37 is about three miles away. Fast trains to London (Kings Cross) from Barnsley take two hours and 40 minutes.
