Salisbury Cathedral is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the country in a majestic setting by the River Avon. It was begun in about 1220 and its most famous bishop, St Osmund, was one of the last English saints to be canonized by the Pope before Henry VIII‘s break with Rome in the 1530‘s.
Today the city is a vigorous community with sensitive new development bringing renewed vitality to the medieval streets where many historic buildings still survive. The Cathedral Close has many fine buildings dating from the eighteenth century including Mompesson House now a National Trust property.

Salisbury is well placed for road and rail communications in the south of England. More than eight major roads converge on the city, the west country road (todays A354) being diverted to run through the city in the fourteenth century. Southampton is about 25 miles and Wilton, the ancient capital of Wessex, about 4 miles. Frequent and fast trains to London ( Waterloo) take approximately an hour and a half.
