The Walled Garden is set in the grounds of Mote House, a fine Grade II listed mansion, to the east of the centre of Maidstone. The original wall that gives the development its name is still in place, protecting the 24 cottages in over eleven acres of landscaped gardens.

Mote House is close to the centre of Maidstone with all its amenities including shops, restaurants, museums and theatres. Watling Street runs through the town and Domesday Book mentions two hospitals catering to pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. The Iquanodon dinosaur was found in Queens Road and incorporated in the town's coat-of-arms. The remains are displayed at the British Museum in London.
