In the 2nd World War its airfield was an important RAF station linking with Biggin Hill to the northeast. London Gatwick is about seven miles to the south on the A23.

The M25 (Reigate Hill, Junction 8) is within two miles and links with other major motorway networks in the south of the country. Dorking to the west is six miles and Oxted to the east is seven miles. Crawley is nine miles and Gatwick Airport is within seven miles. Fast trains to London, either Victoria or London Bridge, take about half an hour.
