Two Tree island to the west is the site of a national nature reserve and Prittlwell Priory, founded in the twelth century, is now a museum surrounded by parkland to the north-east of the town centre. Southend has the longest pier in the world with a minature railway and is popular with fishermen. At low tide the sea goes out for more than a mile.

Westcliff-on-Sea is about 31 miles due east of London on the Essex coast and about 12 miles from Basildon. Canvey Island is ten miles and Rochford three miles. Fast trains from London (Fenchurch Street) take just under an hour.
