Today Reading is a modern university town and regional centre with extensive shopping facilities including the Oracle which includes a cinema village with restaurants and cafes and most high street names. Broad Street has John Lewis amongst other well-known stores.

There are numerous sport and leisure facilities, theatres and museums including Blakes Lock Museum, The Museum of English Life at the University and the Museum of Reading with its fine Roman displays depicting life in the first centuries AD. The museum also has the only full length replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. Oscar Wilde wrote his famous 'Ballad of Reading Gaol' during his enforced stay in the town.

Caversham lies north of the Thames at the junction of the Peppard and Wallingford Roads less than a mile from Reading town centre. Road and Rail links in the area are very good with the M4 Junctions 12, 11, and 10 within easy driving distance (within four miles) and frequent and fast trains to London (Paddington).
