Annan is situated to the north of the Solway Firth about 16 miles southeast of Dumfries on the River Annan. The town lies to the east of the three arched bridge which was designed by Robert Stevenson. The most famous Lord of Annandale was Robert the Bruce. The town's shipyards built many Clippers in the 18th and 19th centuries though the port today is mainly dry.
