Glasgow : Clarkston is about six miles south of Glasgow which is situated on the River Clyde and developed from being the furthest downstream fording point. St Mungo established a religious site here in the 6th century and the town grew in importance following King Davids reorganisation of the Bishopric. In the later middle ages Glasgow University was founded and when Daniel Defoe visited the city in the 18th century it was considered to be one of the fairest in the country.
The industrial revolution brought massive change and the city became an important trading port with the Americas responsible for half of all the British tobacco trade. It later became one of the worlds largest shipbuilding centres and today has the largest economy in Scotland.
