Paisley is about six miles to the west of Glasgow. St Mirin, a contemporary of St Columba, is thought to have founded a church at Paisley in the late 6th century and the Abbey was founded six hundred years later. By the late 13th century Paisley Abbey served the whole of southwest Scotland playing a significant part in the country's history. The town grew to further prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries through the textile industry and increasing trade with the Americas.
