Perth is an ancient small city called the 'Fair City' by Sir Walter Scott in his 19th century novel, 'The Fair Maid of Perth'. Once the capital of Scotland Perth is set on the beautiful River Tay and for many years played an important role in the affairs of the Kingdom. In the Middle Ages Edward 1 of England fortified the town and James 1 of Scotland was later murdered here. James V1 of Scotland, subsequently King of England, was kidnapped in Perth in the 16th century and two centuries later the town was twice taken by the Jacobites.
Today the city remains one of the finest historic places to visit in the whole of Scotland. Nearby at Abernethy is evidence of Roman occupation probably dating from Agricola's campaign in the first century AD. Pictish forts and cairns and the famous 'Stone of Destiny' site at Scone where once Scottish kings were crowned and also Charles II of England. To the south-west is the world famous Gleneagles Golf Course.
