Crieff became a spa town in the 19th century having been an important cattle centre for centuries. Cattle were driven from as far away as Caithness to the annual Michaelmas market and the town became notorious for its banditry and general lawlessness when these events took place. In 1746 the Jacobite army left Crieff on its ill-fated mission.
