Purton : Purton is mentioned in Domesday as Piritone and belonged to Glastonbury Abbey. The village had a mill. The name seems to have derived from 'pear orchard or farmstead where pear trees grow'. Today the village has a beautiful church close to which is a fine sixteenth century manor house and includes a two storey dovecote.
