Mere is a small town about four miles north of Gillingham close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset. It is an ancient settlement and the terraces around 13th century Castle Hill are thought to have been made for vines by the Romans. It borders the Salisbury Plain and is now by-passed by the A303. Charles II is thought to have stayed at one of the several inns after the Battle of Worcester. The 15th century perpendicular church of St Michael the Archangel has a fine screen and a tall tower.
