Malmesbury was known as Malmesberie in Domesday and is one of the oldest boroughs in England having been granted its charter by Alfred the Great in the ninth century. Malmesbury Abbey is built where King Athelstan was buried. The town's name probably derives from 'Maeldub's stronghold' from Maeldub who reputedly founded the Benedictine Abbey in the 7th century.
