Box is a small village famous for its railway tunnel built by Brunel 300 feet below ground level. It is also where The Rev. W.V Awdry wrote Thomas the Tank Engine and lived as a boy. Local quarries were used as an aircraft factory in the 1940s and also for safe storage of the nation's treasures. John Wood the Elder was responsible for Shockerwick House about two miles west of the village.
The centre of Box is just a short walk from Brunel Crescent and Brunel Mews and is home to a comprehensive selection of local services, including convenience store, off licence, newsagent, post office, butcher, cafes, pubs, churches, library, petrol station, doctor's surgery and chemist. There is a recreation ground with tennis courts and sports pitches and a variety of local societies and clubs, including bowls, bridge, WI, gardening and art group.
