Calne is a small town on the old A4 between Newbury and Bath and originally became prosperous with the weaving industry. It lies on the River Marden and at one point there were 20 cloth mills involved in the woollen industry. Later the town was well known for its bacon-curing based on the large numbers of Irish pigs passing through on their to London having been imported to Bristol.
