Retirement Properties Spotlight in Hoo

Hoo: Hoo is mentioned in Domesday Book as Hou belonging to the Bishop of Bayeux and having six churches. In old English Hoo was a 'spur of land''and the name of the peninsula, Isle of Grain, derives from the English word for sand or gravel. Hoo St Werburgh itself lies to the northeast of Rochester just above Upnor Castle built in the late 15th century to protect the naval dockyard at Chatham. Unfortunately the Dutch admiral De Ruyter wasn't impressed by the guns at Upnor and sailed on to attack the British Fleet at anchor in the Medway.
