Gillingham : Gillingham was mentioned in Domesday as Gelingeham and its name is thought to derive from 'homestead of the family or followers of a man called called Gylla'. It lies about four miles north-west of Shaftesbury on the River Stour and has an old 16th century Grammar School. It later grew to prominence due to its silk mills and then in the 19th centruy new industries arrived with the opening of the railways.
